Construction Engineer Training Programme

We've launched a major engineering programme to renew the UK's network of gas pipelines. Training you to lead projects and teams, you'll undertake formal and hands-on training covering both technical and management issues, gaining qualifications and confidence along the way.

Meet Matt

Build a career for the future. We've launched a major engineering initiative to renew the UK's network of gas pipelines, improving services for everyone. To deliver this high-profile work we need talented people to join our Construction Engineer Training Programme. This will give you the skills and experience to lead teams and ongoing projects over the next decade and beyond.

A number of Construction Engineer trainees will be deployed into the Gas Operations business, where responsibilities will include managing teams who deal with gas emergencies and leakage repair in addition to mains replacement.

The project - to replace old iron pipes with plastic polyethylene - is a massive undertaking, involving contractors, partners and major engineering challenges. Mixing on-the-job experience with formal technical and leadership training, this programme will last between two and four years - depending on your skills and qualifications on entry, and will prepare you to manage teams and complex projects. At the end, you'll be a skilled team leader/manager with the following qualifications:

  • BTEC and HNC in Mechanical Engineering
  • Level 5 Diploma in Engineering Management
  • Engineering Technician status with the Institute of Gas Engineers

Timescales

Typically it will take approximately eight weeks from you completing your application form to you attending the assessment centre. During these eight weeks you will need to complete an online questionnaire (Situational Judgement Test - SJT) and where appropriate the Motivation Discussion or Telephone Interview.

Assessment centres are currently scheduled for the dates included in the table below,  they are all held at our Training Centre in Eakring, Nottinghamshire.

Helping you to understand and manage your application

As you will appreciate recruiting for 5 main development programmes and 15 secondary programmes with over 87 different locations, we need to have a phased approached in order to take candidates through the recruitment process and this can often mean that some candidates will be waiting longer to attend Assessment Centres.  This timetable is intended to help you to plan for your application and to understand the sequence of the Assessment Centres we will be running for the 2012 recruitment campaign.

Candidates should expect to move through the various recruitment stages during the eight weeks leading to the Assessment Centre date and receive an invitation to attend an Assessment Centre approximately three weeks before the date.  Please note that Assessment Centre dates are subject to change and we do not guarantee that all candidates will be offered the opportunity to attend an Assessment Centre.

Your application is extremely important to us and we look forward to meeting you in the future.
