What is the selection process for Placement Students?

After meeting our initial programme requirements and successful completion of our Situational Judgement test, we then review each application. If you get through this stage, the final step is an Assessment Centre. You are assessed against our competencies at each stage of your application:

·         Developing Self

·         Planning to Achieve

·         Business & Strategic Awareness

·         Building Relationships (team working, team leadership and communication)

What is a Situational Judgement Test?

The situational Judgement test is made up of a number of job related scenarios typical of what you encounter during your time on the programme.  You will be required to consider each scenario and identify what is the most effective and what is the least effective response to each situation.  You will not be expected to have any prior knowledge or experience of the role, we will be assessing how you judge a situation and whether you recognise the most effective and least effective behaviour to each situation.

Where will I be working on a Placement?

You could be anywhere within the company, it will depend upon where the business opportunities are. Some of our main locations are Warwick, Wokingham (near Reading), Leeds, Solihull, Hinckley (Leicestershire) and the Isle of Grain (Kent).

In all cases, you will be working in a department that has a real need for someone, and real work to do.

Do I need to have a UK car driving licence?

No but you must be willing to learn to drive a car. It is preferable for you to obtain a UK licence by the time you join our Student Programmes as this will help with your mobility and can help accelerate your development by allowing you to undertake project work anywhere in the UK.

If I do a placement, am I guaranteed a place on the graduate programme?

If you perform well on your student project then you will receive an invite to an early assessment centre at the beginning of your final year for our Graduate Programme. And because you have an advantage in having knowledge and experience of our business, there is an expectation for you to perform well at the assessment centre.

When do the assessment centres begin? Where?

Industrial, Year in Industry and Intern Programmes

The assessment centres are likely to take place around January to June, in the Midlands Area.

If you apply early your could pass through the whole recruitment process and receive an offer.  The deadline for applications is 29th February 2012.

Power Academy Programme

The Power Academy is run through the Institute of Engineering & Technology (IET).  National Grid is a founding partner of the Academy and can offer placements to students at their partner universities:

Bath/Cardiff/Imperial College/Manchester/Queen's University Belfast/Southampton/Strathclyde.

Assessment Centres will take place at the universities shown above later this year.

How many student placements are you recruiting for this year?

With Industrial Placements, Year In Industry, Power Academy and Interns, the total to be recruited this year is likely to be 53.

What does your Assessment Centre consist of?

It will assess you against our competency framework which is applied across all programmes and are made up of a combination of interview questions, group exercises and a presentation designed to find out if you've got all the qualities we're looking for.
