Industrial Placement

This year-long placement is an ideal way to develop ‘hands-on' experience in a large organisation. Even better, it provides a head-start for your career, both by letting you get a feel for different types of work, and by putting you in a strong position for future opportunities with National Grid.
Typically, we offer placements to students who are in their penultimate year of their degree and are taking a year out to work in industry as part of a sandwich course. We can offer placements in the following areas:
Commercial disciplines
Quantity Surveying, Business Studies, Management, Economics, Applied Maths, Statistics, Geography, Finance, Accounting, Law, Information technology management for business (ITMB), Business and Computing, Computing, Software, Town Planning, Town Management.
Technical disciplines
Electrical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Physics, Applied Maths.
Though you'll usually be based in just one department, the placement aims to give you a broad understanding of our whole business
Wherever you're working, you'll be part of a team, being mentored and supervised while you get to grips with real and meaningful assignments. On top of this, we'll provide training too, including a four-day development workshop and opportunities to network with colleagues across our business.
Many Industrial Placement students go on to become Sponsored Students and then join our Graduate Development Programme.

The Year in Industry
Backed by Government, this national scheme is for students who decide to take a year out before or during university - and gives you valuable experience and a recognised qualification.
Generally, the placement starts between June and August and finishes the following summer. During that time, you'll be based in a specific area of our business, working on live projects with experienced people who will help you learn and make the most of your time here.
Gives you valuable experience and opportunity to go on a YII management and leadership training course. This involves lectures and other training activities, as well as practical assignments covering topics such as team dynamics, customer care and developing people and planning work.
At the end of the year, you'll also be in a good position to apply for our Sponsored Student Programme or our Graduate Development Programme.
To get onto this programme, you need to be studying one of the following engineering degree disciplines:
- Electrical
- Electronic
- Mechanical
- IT
- Business and Computing

Internship
A 12-14 week placement – during the summer of your penultimate year at University and before you start, we’ll contact you to discuss your project in order for you to have the best development experience possible.
Just over three months might sound like a short time, but you'll be surprised at how much learning and development you can pack in (and the benefits and rewards)!
The placement could be anywhere in the UK, so you must be willing to work away from home. Before you start, we'll work with you to plan an individual development experience, and provide ongoing feedback and support throughout. All we ask is that you fully commit to the programme, and work hard to deliver outstanding performance. What's in it for you?

· A salary based on £15,600 (pro rata)
Best of all, if you have delivered excellent performance during your placements you will be invited to attend an early Assessment Centre for our Graduate Development Programme at the start of your final year, leaving you free to concentrate on achieving that all important grade.
To be considered, you'll need to be on track to achieving:
2.2 or above in either BEng or MEng in Electrical / Electronic / Electrical and Electronic / Mechanical / Civil Engineering.
2.1 or above in Information Technology Management for Business (ITMB) / Business and Computing.
2.1 or above in Business and/ or Finance degree.
Power Academy

Open to anyone studying BEng or MEng in Electrical, Mechanical, and Electrical & Mechanical, Mechatronics or a Power Systems Engineering degree at one of the partner universities, this offers sponsorship and an eight-week summer placement.
National Grid specifically looks to individuals whose good academic results are matched with strong personal and behavioural competencies.
The Power Academy is run through the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET). National Grid is a founding partner of the Academy, and can offer placements to students at the partner universities:
- Bath
- Cardiff
- Imperial College
- Manchester
- Queen's University (Belfast)
- Southampton
- Strathclyde
Sponsorship includes a bursary, book and software allowance and contribution toward university fees. Sponsored Student
If you've been on one of our 12-month long student placements, you can apply for one of our 'sponsorships'.
This includes bursary payments, a book and software allowance and an eight-week paid summer placement, all of which can be a real help in getting you through the expense of university. What's more, the summer placements are structured with clear objectives, and closely monitored by your line manager, helping continuously develop your career skills.
Best of all, if you have delivered excellent performance during your placements you will be invited to attend an early Assessment Centre for our Graduate Development Programme at the start of your final year, leaving you free to concentrate on achieving that all important grade.
Locations and Timescales
We have student opportunities all over the UK but the majority are at our main sites which include: Warwick, Wokingham, Leeds, Hinckley and Isle of Grain (Kent).
Typically you should be applying eight weeks before the Assessment Centre in order to move through the online questionnaire (Situational Judgements Test - SJT) and where appropriate the Motivation Discussion or Telephone Interview. Dates of scheduled Assessment Centres in 2012 are listed below:

Helping you to understand and manage your application
As you will appreciate recruiting for 5 main development programmes and 8 secondary programmes with over 55 different locations, we need to have a phased approached in order to take candidates through the recruitment process and this can often mean that some candidates will be waiting longer to attend Assessment Centres. This timetable is intended to help you to plan for your application and to understand the sequence of the Assessment Centres we will be running for the 2012 recruitment campaign.
Candidates should expect to move through the various recruitment stages during the eight weeks leading to the Assessment Centre date and receive an invitation to attend an Assessment Centre approximately three weeks before the date. Please note that Assessment Centre dates are subject to change and we do not guarantee that all candidates will be offered the opportunity to attend an Assessment Centre.
