Joe Lynch - Construction Engineer Training Programme
National Grid is carrying out a replacement programme and our role is to manage the programme as far as managing the teams out on site goes. We're training to do that at the moment but when we've finished we'll be managing these teams ensuring safety, compliance and productivity as well.
On a day to day basis I normally start my day in the office, go and speak to the manager to see what he's got planned for me for the rest of the day and the week, and then go off and do my various tasks. Some of those tasks include going and seeing the teams on site, checking for safety and making sure they're doing the right things, and compliance - getting involved in my NVQ work, I do a lot of research out on the patch for my NVQs, making sure that I'm helping the supervisors whenever they need it, team briefings and just trying to learn the managerial side of things as well as keeping my hand in on the compliance and the technical side of work as well.
The job, it's not all indoors, it's not all outdoors, you're all over the place, there's quite a lot of different things going on every single day. It's fast paced and the amount of money that National Grid are obviously spending on us for development and training, you wouldn't get it anywhere else so that's probably the best part of my job
The best thing about the National Grid working environment would be the fact that everyone helps each other out - it's very much a team game and if you've got any problems you can always go to somebody within National Grid to get help and advice. The technical side of National Grid is excellent and that's a really good learning point for me.
If a friend was thinking about applying for a job within National Grid I'd only encourage it. National Grid is a great company to work for and it would be a great career move for them.
