James Ombudo - Project Engineer

My role as a project engineer involves basically looking after a project from cradle to grave - so I'd have to keep a handle on the finances, quality of work being done and things such as design as well. I'll be co-ordinating these to ensure the project is delivered to time, quality and cost at the very end.

I really enjoy the responsibility and the wide variety of jobs on offer. You really get an opportunity to influence. For example, the new nuclear power station that's being built, I worked on a scheme that involved a new overhead line for that so it's nationally significant projects as well.

If a friend was thinking of applying to National Grid I'd definitely encourage them, I'd tell them National Grid was a fantastic employer with a world of opportunities, whether in commercial or engineering, the opportunities are endless. The energy industry is very exciting, there's a lot of change with the CO2 targets and the wind generation coming in, so it's a fantastic time to join National Grid and I guarantee them they'll not be disappointed.

I like working here for a number of reasons but the main one for me is the challenge and the ability to have an impact on national projects, because everything we do in National Grid has an impact on the whole of the nation, so for me that's the biggest thing.
