Meet our People

Matthew Porch

I work for Asset Management and we maintain the primary equipment for the transmission system. In a typical week, my role could be going to various sites within my group. I could be working on air blast circuit breakers, compressors, transformers, this would include with the maintenance and repair of this equipment. I’m currently working on the maintenance of a supergrid transformer but next week I could be working on a compressor at Aberthaw, every thing, every week is different. There could be a major impact if my job wasn’t done successfully, as the equipment and the assets could get damaged, in the long run then it could cost a lot of time, money and effort to the company.

It’s a great sense of achievement once the team has completed the maintenance on the equipment so that everything’s done safely and complete, and the lights stay on.

I’d describe my job as being very fact paced, competitive, quite risky but at the same time very safety minded. You could be working out there and you’ve got to be really spot on, really thinking, show good team work, got to be able to think on your feet and solve problems. I’m about to start a college course which National Grid have supported me with, so hopefully once I complete this I can move on to career opportunities such as a field technician within the company.
