In a normal week, I’ll spend a couple of days on-site, a couple of days in the office, talking to Project Managers, Project Engineers from Siemens and Murphys, some cost assurance and programme work, working with Site Engineers, liaising with National Grid MDE, SAPs, Commissioning Engineers – a lot of interfaces.
The key project that I’m working on at the moment is the Barking SGTH scheme in East London, I’ve just completed a scheme in Taunton – supergrid transformer bay replacement work and I replaced two supergrid transformers in Sheffield last year.
Hopefully I’m going to be working on the Finsbury Park scheme in North London, which is going to be the first substation that National Grid have built in London in the last 20/30 years.
The size of the schemes and the complexity of the schemes, I really enjoy getting stuck into. I know everybody says that every day is different, but in this role and within the alliance, it is.
From a project side, I manage the quality. I look at the quality so I operate as a contract manager, making sure that National Grid, as the customer, get what they want and are not being over-charged and they are getting a safe, quality project at the end of the day.
I came out of the RAF with a mechanical engineering background and I’ve gone into the electricity supply industry. Obviously I’ve taken that on and I’ve used the things that I learned in the air force and applied that and applied myself, and I’m well on the way to having a bachelor of engineering in electrical now.
