Meet our People

Chris Rison - Technical Graduate, Gas Distribution

Before I started at National Grid. To start with, when I left school I did a Year In Industry first of all, in civil engineers, then I went to the University of Warwick and did a masters of engineering in Mechanical Engineering and after that I wanted another year at uni so I did an MSc in Climate Change over in Norwich and then joined National Grid after that.

At the moment I'm working on the smart travel project which will be getting all the gas distribution fleet of vehicles - which is over 3000 - installed with a new piece of hardware that locates each vehicle all the time and in the long run this will help us to cut down on vehicle travel times..

I found the application process to National Grid to be very thorough but also quite straightforward. There's a number of different things you have to do, there's an online application, then you go through to telephone interview and all the rest of it but I think overall you get a flavour for the different skills they're trying to pick up and that they want to employ you for, I think that's quite clear so overall I think it's a fair process.

During the next six months I'll be working in transmission which will be a good experience for me having spent a year in distribution, I'll see the other side of the business and after that I'm hoping I'll go and work as a supervisor back in gas distribution. What that will do, it will give me the field side whereas I've spent a year and a half in the office then I'll see what's in the ground and the guys who are getting their hands dirty each day so that will hopefully stand me in good stead for whatever I do after that in the future.
