Operating both Electricity and Gas Transmission Systems, we undertake the full range of activities required for the efficient, real-time delivery of secure and reliable energy from source supplier to distributor company as well as directly connected customer. We provide the level playing field for all parties to connect and trade energy. We play the vital balancing role to ensure the systems remain viable and manage access to the Transmission Systems for maintenance, new connection or other activities; there are three divisions within Network Operations:
Electricity Operations
Managing the real-time operation of the Electricity Transmission System, Electricity Operations are based in Wokingham, Berkshire.
Our Transmission, Strategy and Energy sub-teams work closely together to ensure the safe, secure and efficient operation of the power system. With five shift teams to enable full 24/7 coverage, our Control section oversees all aspects of electricity power system operation from the day ahead to real time.
We also have day teams helping to ensure things run smoothly; investigate events when they don't and develop and manage system analysis and modelling tools.
Energy Operations
The Energy Operations function brings together all of the elements of commercial and operational forecasting, planning and policy. In order to ensure that the system can be operated both securely and economically it is essential that the plans are viable, the forecasts accurate and our policy flexible enough to ensure optimal conditions can be delivered.
The primary objective of Energy Operations is the timely provision of quality guidance to Gas & Electricity Balancing & Trading to facilitate the optimal delivery of the Incentive Schemes whilst satisfying all Operational Security & Safety Standards and enabling system access to deliver our Transmission asset strategy.
The energy operations teams work from Warwickshire and Berkshire.
Gas Operations
We're responsible for the real time safe and efficient operation of the UK National Gas Transmission System (NTS) 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. This involves maintaining a daily balance between supply and demand, maintaining system pressures to satisfactory levels and ensuring that strict gas quality standards are met.
We also maintain the daily commercial trading arrangements and systems used across the UK gas industry and additionally, on their behalf, we undertake the role of the Network Emergency Co-ordinator (NEC) in the event of a transportation system supply emergency.
